Nainital is a city and an important tourist destination located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand state, India. It is also the district headquarters. It is called the Lake District of India, because the whole place is surrounded by lakes. The word 'Naini' means eyes and 'Tal' means lake. Nestled amidst the snow-capped mountains, this place is surrounded by lakes. The most prominent of these lakes is the Naini Lake, after which the place is named Nainital. Naina Peak is the highest peak in the north of the hills around this lake.

Surrounded by bugyals or velvety meadows and pristine snow-capped peaks, Chopta is an all-year holiday destination: pleasant in summer, rain-fresh in monsoon and a snow-clad fairyland in winter. Chopta is at the epicentre of the Panch Kedar – the five most sacred Shiva temples in the state. On its left are located Kedarnath and Madmaheshwar shrines and on the right, Rudranath and Kalpeshwar, and just above it, the Tungnath temple.

Chopta is a birding paradise and you can see over 240 species of birds here, including native and migratory species like Himalayan monal, Himalayan swiftlet, Himalayan griffon, scarlet finch, hill partridge, and so on. Nearby places like Dugalbitta, Mandal village, Makkumath and the Tungnath trek route are the best sites for watching our feathered friends. Gangotri
is the origin of the Ganges River. The temple of Gangaji is situated at an altitude of 3042 meters above sea level. The surroundings on the right side of Bhagirathi are very attractive and beautiful. This place is situated at a distance of 100 km from Uttarkashi. The temple of Ganga Maiya was built by the Gorkha commander Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century. The present temple was rebuilt by the royal family of Jaipur. Every year, between the months of May to October, lakhs of devout pilgrims come here to visit the holy holy Ganges. Like Yamunotri, the holy holy temple of Gangotri also opens on the holy festival of Akshaya Tritiya and the doors of the temple are closed on the day of Deepawali.

Yamunotri is 3235 m above sea level in Uttarkashi district. There is a temple situated on the top. This temple is a temple of Goddess Yamuna. It is said that the person who comes to Yamunotri Dham and takes a bath in the holy water of Yamunaji and has darshan of Shani Dev in Kharsali in the presence of Yamunotri, all his troubles are removed. At Yamunotri, by the mere touch and sight of Suryakund, Divyashila and Vishnukund, people are freed from all sins and attain the supreme abode. The shrine of Goddess Yamuna, is situated at the source of river Yamuna. This shrine is located in the western part of the Garhwal Himalayas. On top of this is the Bandarpoonch Peak (3615 m) opposite Gangotri. The actual source of Yamunotri is a frozen lake and glacier (Champasar Glacier) which is situated on Kalind Parvat at an altitude of 4421 m above sea level.
